Caption: Dragons. Myths and legends about dragons can be found worldwide. In many western cultures, the dragon is a symbol of death and evil. In Christian art, a dragon is often seen being crushed under the feet of saints and martyrs, symbolising the triumph of Christianity over paganism. However, the ancient Greeks and Romans believed dragons to have a benign, protective influence. In eastern cultures, dragons are friendly, peaceful creatures that symbolise good fortune. In ancient China, the dragon was a symbol of the Emperor and was widely believed to be a real creature that controlled the weather. Even today, Eastern dragons are loved and worshipped in temples and shrines.
