Caption: HIV, glass sculpture. Glass model of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), the virus that causes AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). This sculpture was designed by the British artist Luke Jerram in consultation with virologists and created in collaboration with glass blowers. It features a transparent spherical outer layer, which represents the outer lipid membrane of the virus. An opaque inner section represents the RNA-containing protein capsid of the virus. Smaller globular structures protruding from the outer layer represent surface glycoproteins.
