Caption: Exploding white dwarf, 3D simulation. Supercomputer model of a Type Ia supernova. The surface of the star is coloured green. Burning stellar material (yellow/orange) has expanded beyond the surface of the star and has transitioned to a detonation model where it will explode with supersonic force. A white dwarf is a very dense star, roughly the size of the Earth, but with a mass comparable to the Sun. When the white dwarf runs out of fuel it explodes.
