This plasmodium species is often used to infect mice as a model of human malaria, which is caused by another Plasmodium sp. parasite. Sporozoites are the infectious stage of the parasite and, in malaria, are passed from the mosquito's salivary ducts into the host. Here they are being studied as part of research to help develop an anti-malaria vaccine. Photographed at the Pasteur Institute, Paris, France.
