Caption: Georges Charpak (1924-2010), French physicist. In 1992 Charpak won the Nobel Prize in Physics, for his invention and development of particle detectors - in particular the multi-wire proportional chamber. He also invented the drift chamber. These two designs allowed large detectors to operate quickly and be built cheaply. Photographed in Paris, France, on 28th April 2008.
