Caption: Hurricane Floyd. Satellite image showing Hurricane Floyd (white, upper right) passing over the Atlantic Ocean. Floyd was the third major hurricane of the 1999 Atlantic hurricane season, peaking as a Category 4 hurricane. It triggered the third largest evacuation in US history, with 2.6 million residents in five states ordered to leave their homes as it approached. It latest from 7-19 September and was one of the largest Atlantic hurricanes ever recorded.
