Caption: Mussel growing. Worker cleaning the pilings on a mussel farm at low tide. There are a variety of methods used for growing mussels. This farm uses the intertidal growth, or bouchot, technique, which uses pilings (upright wooden poles, known in French as bouchots) placed in the sea. The mussels grow on ropes tied in a spiral on the pilings, while mesh netting underneath prevents the mussels from falling away. This method needs an extended tidal zone. Photographed in Saint-Brieuc Bay, Cotes d'Armor, France.
