This broadcast was watched by an estimated 600 million worldwide. The astronauts were Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. The latter planted the flag and the former mounted the lander's TV camera on a tripod to obtain this view. The moonwalk lasted 2.5 hours. Armstrong and Aldrin later ascended to lunar orbit and returned safely to Earth. The lander remained on the Moon, with a plaque stating that they 'came in peace for all mankind'.
