Water thick-knee (Burhinus vermiculatus). This bird belongs to the stone curlew family, whose members are nocturnal, possessing large, amber-coloured eyes which provide them with good night vision. It inhabits stony wastelands in tropical Africa, both the male and the female having a yellow-brown plumage which camouflages them effectively in their habitat. They feed mainly on beetles and worms, but their diet may also include frogs and mice. Photographed in the Mkhuze Game Reserve, South Africa.
