Caption: The curvature of the surface of the sea is revealled from the coast or at the summit of a high tower or hill, as the masts of a ship gradually disappear below the horizon. The fact of the successive appearances on the surface of the sea of different parts of the vessel is a clear proof that the Earth is formed of a sphere. The second illustration shows the course of a vessel, seen in profile, at various positions on the convex surface of the ocean. Illustration from 'The Heavens' by Amedee Guillemin, Publ. Richard Bentley 1878.
