Plasma sphere. This devices consists of a metal sphere (centre) surrounded by gas. The metal sphere has a very high electrical voltage applied to it. This causes a large potential difference between the sphere and the surrounding wall. The intervening space contains gas at low pressure, and static discharges across the gas cause the gas atoms to lose their electrons, turning the gas into a plasma. When the nuclei and the electrons recombine they emit light (blue).
