Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Coronary angioplasty surgery. Surgeon holding a stent (wire mesh tube, centre) on a balloon catheter (black), which will be used in an angioplasty on a patient's coronary artery. Angioplasty is a technique used to mechanically widen a narrowed or obstructed blood vessel. A balloon catheter (seen running through the stent) is used to guide the stent into place in the artery. Once in place the balloon is inflated to expand the stent and open the blood vessel. The balloon is then deflated and removed, leaving the stent behind.
