Caption: European water vole (Arvicola amphibius) taking pondweed back to its nest to feed. Water voles are mostly herbivores, but in winter they may supplement their diet with water snails. They inhabit a region from western Europe through Siberia to southwest Asia and are one of the largest types of voles, with males growing up to 22 centimetres in length. They have a short lifespan of only 5 to 6 months. Photographed in Surrey, UK.
