Caption: A carriage on the monorail that services the whole of the 27km circumference of the Large Electron- Positron collider (LEP) ring at CERN, near Geneva. The monorail is used to ferry technicians and their equipment to service the ring, the largest of its kind in the world. LEP was completed in 1989, being innaugurated on 13 November. The LEP ring accelerates electrons and positrons up to energies of 50 GeV (Giga electron Volts) each, producing collision energies of up to 100 GeV. At this energy, electrons and positrons will anihilate each other in collision, leading to the production of particles such as the Z-naught, one of the mediators of the weak nuclear force.
