Caption: Beaker containing weak solution of sodium hyroxide; the addition of a few drops of acid-base indicator turns the solution blue and confirms the presence of an alkali. Sodium hydroxide was formed by the reaction between a small piece of sodium metal and water. Sodium is a soft, dull metal which reacts strongly with water, with the release of heat; the reaction is described as being exothermic. A large lump of sodium would have produced a violent, possibly explosive reaction.
