Caption: Tube containing sodium bicarbonate (sodium hydrogen carbonate) to which vinegar (containing acetic acid) has been added: the mixture reacts and gives off copious quantities of carbon dioxide. Because sodium bicarbonate is harmless in itself and undergoes this harmless reaction with acid, it is often used in the treatment of acid spillage and as a medicinal antacid.
