Caption: Demonstration of an experiment showing the reaction of sodium with water. In this image a lump of the soft, grey metal is about to be dropped into a beaker of water. When the sodium enters the water, a violent exothermic reaction occurs in which the sodium reduces the water to hydrogen (given off as a gas) & combines with liberated hydroxyl ions to produce sodium hydroxide (a weak alkali). Sodium belongs to the group of alkali metals situated in group 1 of the periodic table.
