Caption: Paper chromatography. In this example, a drop of a mixture of dyes (possibly an ink) was placed on a strip of filter paper and suspended in a beaker of water, which acts as a solvent. The passage of solvent up the filter paper has separated the different coloured components of the dye. Chromatography (in Greek "colour writing") is applied in various forms to separate & analyse mixtures of molecules with similar physical properties. These various types of chromatography, such as gas chromatography (GC), & liquid chromatography (HPLC) are important tools in modern analytical chemistry.
