Caption: Electron displacement reaction. If a metal strip is placed in a solution of ions of a metal of lower electronegativity, the strip metal will displace the ions in solution. In this case, the metal strip is zinc (electronegativity = 3. 0) and the solution is copper sulphate (copper = 2. 6). The zinc loses electrons to form zinc ions, these displace the copper ions from solution by making them combine with electrons to form metallic copper. This creates a dark deposit of copper on the surface of the zinc strip. This image shows the reaction shortly after initiation. (First in a series of two).
