Caption: Scientist inspecting a sensor to be used to predict the onset of landslides. This research is taking place at the School of Electronics and Computer Science, at the University of Southampton, UK. The work is funded by the US-based National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The aim is to develop fist-sized sensors to monitor erosion rates during California's storm season. The sensors have been placed in Los Laureles Canyon in Mexico, an area which is repeatedly underwater due to torrential rain and mud slides.
