Caption: Keratinocyte skin cells. Fluorescent light micrograph of the cytoskeleton of human keratinocyte skin cells. Cell nuclei are oval. The rest of the cell's contents have been biochemically extracted. The cytoskeletons of these cells have become dominated by keratin fibres, the main protein found in hair and nails. The cytoskeleton maintains the cell's shape, allows some cellular mobility and is involved in intracellular transport. Keratinocytes are the major type of skin cell, changing as they pass through the skin and eventually becoming dead keratinised cells at the skin's surface. Magnification: x1,500 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
