Caption: Missile sketch by the pioneering Soviet rocket scientist Sergei Korolyov (1907-1966). Korolyov's early career was involved with designing aircraft. He was then part of the early Soviet rocket society GIRD in the 1930s. Imprisoned for six years during one of Stalin's purges, he was still allowed to work on rocket designs. Released in 1944, he worked on ICBMs (nuclear missiles). In 1953, he proposed the use of rockets for space travel, and in 1957 this led to the launch of Sputnik 1, the world's first artificial satellite. As the chief Soviet rocket designer, he worked on the Vostok and Voskhod spacecraft programs.
