Caption: Physician and apothecary. Physician (right) in the shop of an apothecary (left), pointing to medicines in jars on the shelves. The role of apothecaries in dispensing treatments for medical conditions has evolved into that of the modern pharmacist. This artwork is from a 1497 edition of 'Hortus sanitatis' (Garden of Health), printed in Mainz, in what is now Germany, by Jacob Meydenbach. Also called 'Ortus Sanitatis', this work contains treatises on plants, animals and medicinal treatments, and was first published in 1491.
