Caption: Tower of Babel being built. As told in the Judaeo-Christian bible's Book of Genesis, this tower, which was built to scale heaven, was destroyed by God. As punishment, the builders were scattered and instead of one language there were now many. The text on the tower is a form of the name Babylon, an ancient city that is often depicted as the site of this tower. This woodcut is from the Biblia Dudesch, a version of the Christian bible that was published in 1522 in Halberstadt, in what is now Germany.
