Caption: Ivar Giaever (born 1929), Norwegian-Canadian physicist, with his family. Giaever studied mechanical engineering in Norway, graduating in 1952 and emigrating to Canada in 1954. He moved to the USA in 1956. He received his PhD in 1964. In Canada and the USA he worked for General Electric. It was his work in solid-state physics from 1958 to 1969 that earned him a share of the 1973 Nobel Prize in Physics. In 1969, he focused on the study of biophysics, using theories in solid-state physics to explain the behaviour of protein molecules on solid surfaces. Photographed in 1973.
