Front row from left are Austrian-US physicist Karl Herzfeld (1892-1978), German-US physicist Otto Stern (1888-1969) and German-Swiss-US physicist Albert Einstein (1879-1955). At back centre is Austrian physicist Paul Ehrenfest (1880-1933). They are in the laboratory of the French physicist Pierre Weiss (1865-1940) at the Institute of Technology, Zurich, Switzerland. Weiss worked on ferromagnetism. Ehrenfest worked on quantum mechanics. Herzfeld worked on physical ultrasonics. Stern worked on molecular beams. Photographed in 1913.
