From left to right are; US physical chemist Joseph Mayer (1904-1983), German-US theoretical physicist Maria Goeppert-Mayer (1906-1972) and Austrian-US physicist Karl Herzfeld (1892-1978). Joseph is best known for his work on the thermodynamics of ionic crystals. Maria was awarded the 1963 Nobel Prize for Physics for her contribution to the Nuclear Shell Model.
