Caption: French nuclear physicists. From left are; Maurice Surdin (1911-2003), Frederic Joliot-Curie (1900-1958) and Lew Kowarski (1907-1979). In 1939 Joliot-Curie and Kowarski performed the experiments that established the possibility of nuclear chain reactions and therefore nuclear energy production. Surdin worked for the French Atomic Energy Commission from 1946, playing a crucial role in its development.
