Caption: Joseph-Pierre Durand (1826-1900), French philosopher and early hypnotist. Durand was part of the early work on hypnosis in France, following on from the work done by the Scottish surgeon James Braid and others in London and Manchester. Braid had coined the term hypnotism and published in the 1840s. Durand published his work 'Cours de Braidisme ou hypnotisme nerveux' in 1860. This work culminated in the Salpetriere School of Hypnosis and the Golden Age of hypnosis in France, lasting from 1882 to 1892. Artwork from the first volume (first period of 1888) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
