Caption: Asiatic glassfish. Transparent fish swimming in water and seen from the side and front. There are several species of the Asiatic glassfish family (Ambassidae) which are transparent, such as the Indian glassy fish. These specimens are from India, though similar glassfish are found in other Asian countries along the Indian and Pacific oceans. The internal organs (viscera) and skeletons are visible. These fish can be 'painted' by the injection of a dye, but this is opposed by many traders in the aquarium industry. Artwork from the first volume (first period of 1888) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
