Caption: Balancing demonstration. Objects that would not normally balance, such as this open penknife on the edge of a table, can be made to balance if extra weights are added in a certain configuration. This is shown here with a soup ladle hanging downwards from the penknife. This redistributes some of the weight below the balancing point, increasing the stability. The orientation will change as weights are added inside the ladle. This party trick is one of several published in a column in a French popular science weekly. The column was called 'Science Amusante', and this artwork is from the first volume (first period of 1888) of 'La Science Illustree'.
