Caption: Scorpio, the Scorpion, being the eighth of the twelve constellations assigned an astrological sign of the Zodiac (23 October to 21 November). One of twelve inlaid marble panels decorating Bianchini's Meridian Line in the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, Rome (1702). These are positioned either side of the line and are the work of Francesco Tedeschi, who based them on the drawings of Jacobo de Gehn that were published in Bayer's Uranometria (1603), the celestial atlas which introduced the modern method of naming stars.
