Caption: Brain's eye nerves. Artwork of the human brain (orange) and skull (purple) from above, coloured to show the optic nerves (green) and neural pathways. The front of the head is at left. The optic nerves travel from the back of each eye to the rear of the brain, where most of the neural vision processing takes place. This area of the brain is called the visual cortex (light green) and is located in the occipital lobe. The optic nerves branch out and terminate on the opposite side of the brain to the eye that they originate from, crossing at a place called the optic chiasma. This crossing allows the images from both eyes to be combined.
