Caption: Decomposition of sodium bicarbonate. A test tube of lime water (right) turns milky as carbon dioxide (CO2) bubbles through it from a heated test tube containing sodium bicarbonate powder (left). Heat makes sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) decompose into sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), water & carbon dioxide: 2NaHCO3 ----> Na2CO3 + CO2 + H2O The carbon dioxide then reacts with calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) in the lime water, producing a milky precipitate of calcium carbonate: Ca(OH)2 + CO2 ----> CaCO3 + H20
