Caption: Earthquake types. Artwork showing tectonic plate movements (arrows) and associated earthquakes (red concentric rings). Tectonic plates moving parallel to each other (left) lead to strike-slip earthquakes. This type is more powerful than the second type (middle, normal faulting), where slippage is in the direction of movement, such as at a divergent boundary at a mid-ocean ridge. The most powerful type of earthquake (right, thrust or reverse faulting) is where slippage is up or down against the direction of one of the plates, such as at a convergent boundary at a subduction zone. The latter can cause devastating tsunamis.
