Caption: Golden Gate Bridge. Artwork of the Golden Gate Bridge, looking west from San Francisco Bay towards the Pacific Ocean. This suspension bridge opened on 28 May 1937. At that time, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. It is used for road, cycle and pedestrian transport from the city of San Francisco (left) to Marin County (right). The two towers are 1280 metres apart (shore-to-shore distance is about 2.7 kilometres). The two towers rise 227 metres above the water. The clearance below the bridge is 67 metres at high tide, while the channel depth is some 91 metres. The arch at left is the location of Fort Point.
