Caption: Liquid nitrogen being poured over a balloon. The vapour in this picture is made of water droplets condensed from the air by the extremely low temp- erature. The balloon has shrunk due to contraction of the cooled air inside it. About 78% of the Earth's atmosphere is nitrogen. Normally a gas, it turns into a liquid at temperatures below 77.4 Kelvin (-198 Celcius). Liquid nitrogen is used as a refrigerant in cryogenics, and in low- temperature research.
