Caption: Household rat. Artwork of a rat peering through a hole in an internal wall in a house. The brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) is a rodent found worldwide, especially in Europe and North America. It is found nearly everywhere that humans live, especially in urban areas. It reaches a body length of 25 centimetres and is an omnivore, but in much of its range it feeds on grass and cereal seeds, though it will also forage for scraps of food in urban areas. Holes in walls and skirting boards, made by gnawing, allow rats and mice to move around a residence in the spaces within internal walls.
