Caption: Litmus paper. These papers are mottled pink and pale blue, indicating areas of different pH (acidity or alkalinity). Litmus is a chemical indicator derived from the lichen Lecanora tartarea. Its characteristic response is to turn red with acids and blue with alkalis. It is usually seen in the form of litmus paper, which is often more convenient to use than fluid indicator.
