Caption: Vegetation altitude zones. Artwork showing the different zones of vegetation found on mountains with increasing elevation above sea level. The zones are indicated by the lines at left, and are illustrated with the vegetation found in a temperate climate. At bottom is the lowland zone, with deciduous trees. Above this is the montane zone, with coniferous trees, extending to the tree line. The alpine zone is here split into a low and high level, with the former including dwarf shrubs and trees, and the latter mainly grasses. Above this is the sub-nival zone, mainly lichen and mosses. Above this is the nival (glacier) zone of snow and ice.
