Caption: Peter Guthrie Tait (1831-1901), Scottish physicist. Tait is best known for the textbook 'Treatise on Natural Philosophy', which he co-authored with Lord Kelvin. He also studied the corrections needed by thermometers when working at high pressures, such as those experienced during the deep-sea observations taken on board HMS Challenger during the expedition of 1872-1876.
