Caption: Marmaray railway tunnel. This is part of the Marmaray project to build a railway tunnel under the Bosphorus to connect the European and Asian parts of Istanbul, Turkey. Excavations for this project were delayed in November 2004 when archaeologists found extensive remains of an ancient Byzantine port. This led to excavations over a period of 6 to 7 years, delaying the completion of the railway tunnel until at least 2011. The tunnel is being built to withstand the powerful earthquakes that occur in this region. Photographed in 2009.
