Caption: Chromate solutions. Coloured solutions of potass- ium chromate (yellow) and potassium dichromate (red) in beakers. These two chemicals are made of potassium (K), chromium (Cr) and oxygen (O). Potassium chromate has the chemical formula K2CrO4 whilst potassium dichromate is K2Cr2O7. Both molecules are comprised of two positively-charged potassium ions joined to a complex, double- negatively charged ion which is made of chromium and oxygen. These chromate ions are oxidisers, being able to strip electrons from some other chemicals to alter their chemical properties. As such, chromates find uses in tanning, photographic processing, printing, and in pigments.
