Caption: Letter from Wallace to Darwin. Close-up of the opening words of a letter sent by the British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) to the British naturalist Charles Darwin (1809-1882) on 18 September 1868. The letter concerned the colouration of female birds and insects. Wallace and Darwin's theories of evolution had been jointly published ten years earlier in 1858, and they corresponded regularly after that.
