Caption: Dedication by Wallace to Darwin, in a work published in 1869. The British naturalists Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) and Charles Darwin (1809-1882) independently developed theories of evolution which were jointly published some ten years earlier in 1858. Wallace and Darwin subsequently became friends and Wallace was a staunch defender of Darwin and his theories that were published in 'On the Origins of Species' (1859). This dedication is from the opening pages of 'The Malay Archipelago' (1869), the work that described Wallace's observations that led to his own theories on evolution.
