Caption: Sowerby family letter, 18th century. Letter to a Mrs Reynolds, held in the archives of the family of her son-in-law English naturalist James Sowerby (1757-1822) and his son James de Carle Sowerby (1787-1871). The elder Sowerby's first wife died in 1815 and he remarried in 1819 to Maria Catherine Reynolds. Maria was the daughter of an Admiral Reynolds and his wife Mrs Reynolds. This letter, dating from the much earlier period 1781 to 1783, is from an archive of five letters addressed to Mrs Reynolds from her brother and sisters in Savannah, Georgia, USA, formerly a British colony.
