Caption: Bacteriophage, conceptual computer artwork. A bacteriophage, or phage, is a virus that infects bacteria. It consists of an icosahedral (20-sided) head (upper left), which contains the genetic material, a tail (cylinder) and tail fibres (leg-like), which fix it to a specific receptor site on the bacterium. Each virus particle (virion) injects its viral DNA into the bacterium. Once within the cell, the DNA will take over, effectively turning the bacterium into a virus-making machine.
