Caption: Ground Zero. View of the central area of the Semipalatinsk nuclear testing site in eastern Kazakhstan. This was the site of the first Soviet nuclear bomb test, that took place on 29 August 1949. In total 456 nuclear weapons tests were conducted at the site - 116 atmospheric and 340 underground - before the implementation of the Test Ban Treaty in 1989. Photographed in 1991.
