The telescope makes observations of the Sun's visible surface (photosphere) through the light of ionised hydrogen (hydrogen-alpha) at 656 nanometres wavelength. The observatory is near the town of Ussuriysk in the far south-east of Russia, about 60km from both the Pacific Ocean and the border with China.
