Caption: District heating. A technician monitoring the start-up of a combined heat and power (CHP) plant. CHP projects are like conventional thermal power stations but utilise waste heat to provide domestic hot water and space heating for an urban district. Larger CHP plants use oil or coal as fuel, smaller and more modern plants use natural gas. This kind of centralised system is most efficient in regions with extended periods of very cold weather in winter. Photographed at Kaliningrad, Russia.
